Yes, You Can Wear Blue Eyeliner to Work and Still Be Uber-Profesh.

I wear a black cat-eye every day. It’s part of my “uniform”. Every morning, I line my lids with liquid, matte eyeliner, and then go about my day. A few nights ago, I went down a Pinterest rabbit hole that led me to pin a few editorial shots of models sporting colored liquid liner. While I’m no model, I do have a face and I’m not shy about trying out a trend or two. On my way home from work yesterday, I stopped at Ulta, purchased the NYX Epic Wear Long Lasting Matte Liquid Liner in Sapphire, and embarked on a blue-lined adventure.

My Honest Thoughts About Blue Eyeliner

I’m going to be honest: I wasn’t 100% sold on the whole cobalt blue eyeliner vibe. Especially since I’m not 21 and headed to a rager. Those days are over. For me, the thought of blue eyeliner evokes a mental collage of spiked 80’s hair, neon, blue eyeshadow to the brow (insert Mimi from The Drew Carey Show), and otherwise not-so-flattering 80’s vibes.

I quickly pushed those visions out of my noggin and focused on making this look contemporary, modern, and flattering. I applied a thin, minimalist line along my lash line. Since I was wearing this look to work, I nixed the cat-eye flick that I normally wouldn’t hesitate to make with my black, matte eyeliner. As for eyeshadow, I opted for a soft, sandy brown from the Huda Beauty Nude Obsessions eyeshadow palette in Nude Medium. I also lined my bottom lid in a black eyeliner from Palladio. For my lashes, I used Milk Makeup High Volume mascara.

The Verdict

I must say that I am not mad at the result. I loved how the cobalt blue was the focus of my face. I forgot about it until a few coworkers mentioned they liked the look and color against my complexion. While I do believe this specific shade of blue can work for a lot of people, it does pop against darker-toned skin. This particular formula didn’t flake off and I only had to apply it once.

I definitely will advise you to give this liquid liner a try, especially if you are looking for a fun and refined look. The sapphire eyeliner won’t be replacing my tried and true black liquid cat-eye, but for $10, I felt comfortable trying out this look without the guilt of throwing down serious coins on a product that may or may not pan out. I can see myself using this eyeliner every once in a while when I’m feeling adventurous. We’ve all had to adjust our makeup routine due to the pandemic and as an unexpected result, eye makeup is now in the front seat and driving full throttle. Through this beauty experiment, I’ve learned that a bold-lined lid is sophisticated and fun and can be worn to work. This look will even work for an evening out. I’m kind of thinking about investing in a high-pigmented, dark navy liquid liner. Stay tuned babes.
